About the Presenters

Mary Lynn Price
- Keynote Speaker

Video Journalist and Podcaster, La Jolla, California
Mary Lynn's talent has led her to teach video editing in the Caribbean and Indonesia and has taken her to Antarctica to tell the stories of women scientists working in the field. She hopes to empower youth to share their passion about science and the environment through the use of video journalism. She will also take part in an exciting pod-casting workshop offered later in the spring to GIOS participants.

Tina Fahy: Presenter
NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), Long Beach, California
Tina Fahy founded the Sea Turtle program at NOAA in Long Beach. Her work focuses on the conservation and management of Pacific Sea Turtle populations.

Chelsea Rochman: Presenter

Graduate Student, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, Environmental Science
As a participating scientist in Scripps' Environmental Accumulation of Plastic Expedition, her work took her thousands of miles off the coast of California to investigate the North Pacific Trash Gyre. She hopes to gain a better understanding of potential damaging effects of plastic debris on the marine ecosystem and the transfer of these pollutants up the food chain.

Cheryl Ward, Ph. D.: Presenter
Maritime Archaeologist, Associate Professor, Coastal Carolina University
Dr. Ward studies the ancient remains of wooden boats and ships. Her recent projects include participating in remote surveys of the ancient coastline of the Black Sea, acting as ship reconstructor in the excavation of the world's oldest planked boats in Egypt, and directing an underwater survey off the ancient pirated coast of Turkey.

Juli Goldstein: Presenter
Marine Mammal Veterinarian/Assistant Professor, Harbor Branch, Florida Atlantic University
Juli Goldstein is the head veterinarian for Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute’s Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Program. Some of her many responsibilities include providing specialized veterinary care to sick and stranded marine mammals, conducting medical research into marine mammal diseases, and teaching marine mammal medicine at Florida Atlantic University. She got involved with the United States Pageant, which emphasizes community outreach and volunteer work in its contestants, and was named Ms. Florida United States 2009!

Nancy Caruso: Presenter
Marine Biologist, Founder and CEO of Get Inspired! Inc.
Nancy Caruso founded her non-profit organization to give people a sense of purpose and instill in them a passion for life to continue learning and exploring. An exciting component of her work is the Orange County Ocean Restoration Project, in which she has taught over 3,000 school children to grow kelp in portable classroom nurseries. Using volunteer divers, the kelp will be used to reforest fragile underwater ecosystems along our coast.

Diana Steller: Presenter
Diving Safety Officer, Research Faculty Member, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories
As the Diving Safety Officer for Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, Diana Steller oversees the research diving program and trains divers to conduct underwater research while using SCUBA. Her personal research interests center on algal ecology and understanding the role of algae as habitats for marine species.

Kate McFadden: Presenter
Assistant Professor, Columbia University, Department of Ecology, Evolution, & Environmental Biology
Kate McFadden is a terrestrial and marine wildlife ecologist who studies how marine animals are affected by human stressors. She also is a mentor and teacher of undergraduate and graduate students in the field of ecology and conservation biology.
